Event Description
On December 26, 2024, Ministry of Forests and Environment organized the event on “Reflections on Nepal’s Presence at COP29 and the International Court of Justice.” This event was organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, in partnership with the Youth Alliance for Environment (YAE), Practical Action Nepal, WWF Nepal, and Save the Children under Climate Ambition Support Alliance (CASA) Program.
The event was honoured by the esteemed presence of Rt. Hon. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli as the Chief Guest, chaired by Hon. Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi, Ministry of Forests and Environment along with Hon. Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Ministry of Home Affairs, Hon. Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Minister Devendra Dahal, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, State Minister Rupa B.K., Ministry of Forests and Environment, Provincial Environmental Ministers, Hon. Members of Parliaments, Hon. VC of National Planning Commission, UN Resident Coordinator, Representatives from Constitutional Commissions, Secretaries from different Ministries, high-level officials from Federal, Provincial and Local Level and other distinguished guests.
The event served as a platform for reviewing the outcomes and active participation of Nepal at COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11–22, 2024, where the country represented themselves in over 50 sessions and 324 meetings. Key interventions were made, calling for the mountain agenda, climate finance, and loss and damage mechanisms. Commitment to climate action by Nepal was further enforced through the "mountain-to-sea" approach and bilateral engagements promoting resilience, transparency, and inclusivity.
The program provided a platform to
• Reflecting on COP29 outcomes
• Highlighting Nepal’s contribution to the global climate agenda
• Strategizing Nepal's future climate actions
• Initiating dialogue for the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad.
The event emphasized the need to establish a dedicated and permanent negotiation team to ensure consistent and effective representation. It also called for the development of standards and procedures for inclusive participation, enabling national delegates, technical experts, and concerned stakeholders to engage meaningfully. A key priority identified was leading on the Mountain Agenda by fostering enhanced collaboration with other mountain countries. Capacity building of national delegates, technical experts, and stakeholders was highlighted as essential to strengthening Nepal’s presence in climate negotiations. Additionally, the discussions underlined the establishing efficient and effective in-country mechanisms for climate finance projects and fund mobilization.
